How I Built Lunacon Construction Group with Zero in the Bank

Starting a business is daunting, and starting a construction business with no financial cushion is even more so. When I decided to leave my secure job and launch Lunacon Construction Group, I was filled with both fear and determination. I had three children depending on me, no company reputation to lean on, and savings that would only last six months. In fact, when we opened Lunacon’s first bank account, there wasn’t a single deposit to make.

1. Start Small, But Strategically

We didn’t dive into large-scale projects immediately. Instead, we focused on projects under $200,000 that didn’t require bonding. By delivering exceptional results on these smaller contracts, we built a reputation for reliability and excellence.

Lesson: Starting small doesn’t mean thinking small. Every project is an opportunity to establish trust, build credibility, and lay a strong foundation for growth.


2. Secure Bonding and Credit

Getting bonding and a line of credit was a game-changer, but it didn’t come easy. After many rejections, one bank finally believed in our vision, granting us a modest $50,000 line of credit. Similarly, our initial bonding capacity was $250,000—basic, but it allowed us to bid on slightly larger projects and prove our capability.

Lesson: Confidence and clarity in your story matter. Sharing your mission and long-term vision with potential partners can turn skepticism into support.


3. Build the Right Relationships

Bonding agents, banks, and insurance partners became instrumental to our success. These relationships weren’t just transactional—they were partnerships that helped us navigate challenges and scale sustainably.

Lesson: Focus on cultivating relationships with people and organizations that align with your goals. A strong network can open doors and provide the support you need to thrive.


The Results of Strategic Growth


Within three years of launching Lunacon, we secured over $5 million in contracts. This growth allowed us to hire 25 employees in just two months. While many businesses were shutting their doors during tough economic times, we were thriving.

Our success wasn’t due to luck—it was the result of a clear vision, relentless perseverance, and intentional relationship-building.
